A Hill-Stead fall favorite for all ages. Hitch a ride on a horse-drawn hay wagon through the brilliant autumn colors of the Connecticut countryside, have your face painted, tap your toes to traditional tunes, enjoy hearty food and beverages, or just stroll through Hill-Stead's meadows and trails. Rain or shine. Nominal program and material fees are charged for individual activities.

Stay on after Hay Day winds down and roll out your picnic blanket! Enjoy live music by popular Connecticut band The Shinolas as you relax on Hill-Stead’s beautiful West Lawn (or under our tent if it rains). Bring your own picnic favorites or purchase dinner from Soup ‘r Samich, who will be on site for the event. Beverages and wine will also be for sale. This event is free to members – so join today, or the day of the picnic! Hill-Stead staff will be on hand to share all of the benefits of being a member.

About The Shinolas: The Shinolas are a Connecticut super group. Jim Chapdelaine (guitar), Lorne Entress (drums), Paul Kochanski (bass), and Ed Iarusso (pedal steel) bring an amazing wealth of experience to their roots/Americana band, having recorded or performed with Les Paul, Phoebe Snow, Lori McKenna, Susan Tedeschi, Ronnie Earl, Big Al Anderson, Catie Curtis, Junior Wells, Ollabelle and numerous others. They are also name droppers, but they have to make a living. Over a get-to-know-you cup of coffee in 2008, Jim and Lorne came up with the idea of a local off-night residency in the Hartford area as a chance for them to tap into their mutual love for American roots music. The band gelled quickly, winning Best Country Band of 2009 in the Hartford Advocate, although pure country is just a slice of what they do.
